used to fly, now i float

it looks like you ran afoul of something with wicked claws…

i was lucky enough to catch a preview screening of tim burton’s alice in wonderland last night with SARAHSPY, thanks to time out new york. by far, my favorite character was the cheshire cat, voiced by stephen fry. i hardly found the 3D necessary, as the film would have been visually stunning in every way without it, but i will admit that having the sensation of the cheshire cat dissipating in front of my face was beyond amazing.

i feel awesome!!!

greetings from sfo

where they don’t have faith in my capacity to use a fork as a weapon.

it’s gray and rainy. i feel cheated. i’m flying midwest airlines so i hope i get a nice big seat along with my chocolate chip cookie. listening to the minutemen and staring at the fog and gosh, southwest just have the trippiest-looking planes, don’t they?

why i need to stop ignoring my cdpile

it contains gems like the uncut magazine compilation of david bowie covers called starman. i think i got it in 2003. anyway, the whole thing is ridiculously good, start to finish… ian mcculloch, christian death, divine comedy… but i think the one that sticks in my head most poignantly is this one – guy chadwick’s realization of “fall in love with me.” i sang it silently to so many people over the years.

your body’s amazing science, explained in cat

science was always one of my favorite subjects, but i don’t think any of my teachers ever got quite this creative. click the images to make them larger.

the 80s almost killed me

finally, a recording of the mountain goats covering the hold steady’s “positive jam” has surfaced. what a good start to a sunday! you can listen to it here.

and now, off to the new york botanical gardens to get my tropics on.

dead guys and live girls

glad i went to the upper west side after a new jersey devils hockey game. quite the culture switch, and totally worth it. ruben of afuche played songs from his popopera. mindy and i sat on the carpet and drank dead guy ale. later i drank brandy and we all packed into the back of a big white van and rode screaming around manhattan.

i’m coming to you.

cutest video chat ever

oh, you know, just hanging out in my apartment, being part of a 4-city videochat.

(kim, R,  is totally adorable; minneapolis internet just felt rebellious at that very second.)

things i’ve been caught dancing to in my apartment

you remember apollonia 6, the girl group spawned from prince’s love interest in purple rain, don’t you? er, okay. i guess i’m one of a few people who obsessed over this song and got really excited when i realized it has an actual video, not just the movie performance. i almost love that the quality is terrible.

sun in the clouds

it’s been a rough weekend. i was happy to wake up to a google alert that let me know the village voice pazz and jop poll of 2009 is up. many people whose writing i’ve long admired have been on the list of critics polled for some time (see: holly george-warren, rob sheffield, michael azerrad, judy berman, marvin lin, amanda petrusich). i am indebted to tiny mix tapes‘ reputation for scoring me a spot in the critics’ poll this year.

here is my album of there year, and here is my ballot.

i’m getting old.

crushing hangovers from not too much booze. maybe my body is trying to teach me a lesson.

i sent this video to my mom to see what she would do. she won’t let her kids sing pop songs, at least not jay-z’s, but i think she’ll like it. if any middle school chorus could be the poster children for why music education is desperately important, it would be the kids at PS22. i mean, i wouldn’t have gotten through middle school or high school without it… along with drama club.

i will jump on this bandwagon.

team conan! i’ve been a fan of his ginger pompadour since i was young enough to get in trouble for watching late-night tv. he gave me my love for andy richter, the masturbating bear, triumph the insult comic dog, in the year 2000, and the ultimate classic: INAPPROPRIATE!

as my roommate aptly described nbc’s actions: “hey conan, why don’t we just move you across the country to do the tonight show and then screw you over because leno is a hack”? read conan’s official statement on NBC’s fuckery here, via gawker.

school house rock got hiiiiiiiiigh, y’all

now is the time when i declare my love for arthur magazine and the attention they pay to such gems as these… old promo videos for parliament funkadelic’s motor booty affair and funkentelechy vs. the placebo syndrome. this is on the real. someone please buy me a tv that thinks it’s 1973.

i got flava

here’s a link to my first feature for earplug, a new music newsletter that’s part of flavorpill’s culture blog flavorwire. the editor is my old friend and total rock star judy berman.  i wrote about sex (and the lack thereof) in 2009’s top indie rock singles. all music. no cats. can you believe it?

(spoiler: this guy stayed sexy in 2009.)

okay, i give in.

i love jersey shore and i want to hang out with snooki. knowing i could probably make it happen is sort of a tempting thought.

this is how i feel today.

i am going to go home and identify with liz lemon on tv. workin’ on my NIGHT CHEESE!

i know she’s a cat and all… but

so tonight i finished a piece i’m writing for a new pub – a secret for now. when it was finally completed, i baked a trader joe’s quiche and deemed it the quiche of celebration. nala had been asleep for like, five hours, but as soon as i started to eat said quiche of celebration, she was all up in my shit, perching on the top of the couch. kind of like a dog. kind of like…

sometimes i think she might be part canine.

i feel like this all over again.

i never get tired of old new york photos

if life magazine still existed, i’d buy it.

paula abdul duets with chuck d

i was reading today’s twitter headlines to my roommate andrew (he really loves it when i do that) and happened upon this tweet from diva extraordinaire, paula abdul: “How’d you like my video with “Chuck D” on my http://www.youtube.com/paulaabdul ?? 🙂 xoxoxo Paula”

i expected a ridiculous musical collaboration, which is of course why i clicked, but this is beyond my wildest dreams (couldn’t embed it, for some reason – regrets, paula?

clicky.
